What is existence?

What is existence?

Here are some quotes by Albert Camus

The struggle itself towards the heights is enough to fill a man's heart. One must imagine Sisyphus happy.
In the depth of winter, I finally learned that within me there lay an invincible summer.
Autumn is a second spring when every leaf is a flower.
The only way to deal with an unfree world is to become so absolutely free that your very existence is an act of rebellion.
There is but one truly serious philosophical problem and that is suicide.
Freedom is nothing but a chance to be better.
I rebel; therefore I exist.
Men must live and create. Live to the point of tears.
Man is the only creature that refuses to be what he is.
Life is the sum of all your choices.
I didn't discover Albert Camus and his brand of existenialism until my Ethics class in undergrad. I had felt it since I was 12. The idea that life is absurd and we either play into the absurdity actively or we rebel against it. That rebellion keeps the suicide at bay. Since I was 12 this is how I lived but didn't have a philosophy to explain it. Deaths of despair are trending now because people are having that same choice. They look at the world and see hopelessness. Financial burdens, unemployment and a lack of worth in society creates this feeling in people. These are people ripe for radicalization. Whether it's Alt-Right or any number of religious terrorists, hopeless folks are dangerous. I was never at risk to be one of these destructive forces. I am a creator and so I keep a vision of building a better future, no matter how hard I try and fail. Just one day at a time. There are so many stories of people being discovered dead in parking lots. I drive all over and sometimes it feels like if I stopped driving I could succumb to their fate. It makes me cry, but I keep moving. Keep fighting. Try to inspire others and help create a better world.
